Alberta Lorene Maddy, age 93, of Albia, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at her home in Albia under the care of EveryStep Hospice. She was born on April 27, 1928 to Harley and Grace (Frye) Stephens. \n\nLorene graduated from Albia Community High School, Class of 1947. She married William Andrew Johnson in 1947, and to this union two children were born; Michael Andrew and Julie Ann. William died in 1950 from Polio. \n\nShe worked as a nurses aide, and helped Ester Landsberger in opening the old Albia Hospital, West of the Albia Square. She also was an Avon representative, and was known as the Avon Lady around Albia for many years. She was a team leader in sales for ten years. \n\nLorene married Benjamin C. Maddy in 1955 and to this union three children were born; Steven C. Lori Marie, and Douglas C. Benjamin preceded her in death in 2010. \n\nShe enjoyed reading, traveling, singing, feeding birds and all wildlife. She was a caregiver, taking great care of her parents, grandparents, neighbors, or anyone needing a helping hand. She loved babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. \n\nSurvivors include her children, Michael Andrew (Delores) Johnson of Monroe, Julie Ann (Dean) Bettis of Albia, Steven (Darlene) Maddy of Albia, Lori (Fred) Schlapman of Brookfield, WI, Douglas (Teresa) Maddy of Ottumwa; thirteen grandchildren, Bill (Jodi) Johnson, Brian (Wendy) Johnson, Jeff (Steph) Bettis, David Bettis, Joleen (Mark) Hugen, Jenny (Tom) Sesker, Ryan Maddy, Lauren Schlapman, Brooke Schlapman, Kelsey (L.J.) Robinson, Shelby (Michael) Hager, Cheyenne Maddy, Payton Maddy; twenty-two great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren; sister, Susan (Dennis) Gray of Texas; sisters-in-law, Jean Stephens of Branson, MO, Lois Maddy of Albia, Judi Johnson of Albia; brother-in-law, Jerry Johnson of Hamilton, IA; special niece, Rhonda McGee, who took wonderful care of Lorene for the last five and a half years, and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by parents, Harley Stephens and Grace Sebben; husbands, William Andrew Johnson and Benjamin C. Maddy; two brothers, Harley Wayne Stephens and Roger Stephens; two sisters, Enid Rae Pletcher and Sharon Ann Nucko, and step-son, Jeffrey Lynn Maddy. \n\nMemorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia with Rev. Roger Henry officiating. A funeral luncheon will follow services at the church. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 4, 2022, from 3-7 p.m., at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia with Lorene's family present.
