Ottumwa, Iowa
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Joseph Smithart, born on February 10, 1951 in Ottumwa, IA, to Harold L. Margaret (Scholes) Smithart. He died on March 25, 2025 at his residence. A man of distinct character and nobility, Joseph lived life on his own terms, defying conventions and embodying the essence of independence. He was a roofer by trade, dedicating many years to Lamb Roofing Company, where he was well-respected for his work ethic and dedication to his craft.
Joseph had a deep love for the outdoors and found joy in the simple pleasures of life. In his leisure time, he found peace and tranquility in fishing and camping, activities he often shared with his brother Robert and nephew David. The bond they formed during these moments will continue to live on, a testament to the love Joseph had for his family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Margaret Smithart. May he find peace in her company once again. His life was a manifestation of the quote by Oscar Wilde: "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." Joseph did not merely exist; he lived, loved, and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched.
He is survived by a siblings, Hazel Harrison, LeRoy O’Laughlin, Robert O’Laughlin, Judy Brandon, Jack Enloe, Jerry Scholes. He was preceded in death his parents; bother, Richard Smithart; sister, Betty Mitchell.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 in Shaul Cemetery.
We invite all who knew Joseph to share their memories of him and upload photos to his memorial page. In remembering him, we keep his spirit alive and honor the extraordinary man that he was.
