Obituary for \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t June Darlene Parenza\n\r\n\t\t\t\tMelrose, IowaJune Darlene Parenza stepped from time, into eternity on August 11, 2015 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa and is now surrounded by loving family in heaven.Darlene was born in Lockman, Iowa on August 10, 1926 to Albert and Pearl Ostring. She spent her early years in Avery before moving to Eddyville where she lived with the Oldman Family. With their gracious guidance, Darlene furthered her schooling, first graduating from high school in Eddyille and then St. Joseph School of Nursing in Ottumwa. She began her career at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. With the loving influence of the Nuns of Mercy at St. Joseph, Darlene converted to Catholicism at age 22. She continued her nursing career in California and Kansas City, Missouri, ultimately returning to Iowa to start a family.Darlene met John Parenza and, after a brief courtship, the two united in marriage on October 5, 1953 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ottumwa. For the great majority of their marriage, they lived on Highway 34 in Melrose where they operated Parenza Store, a small gas station and convenience store connected to the family home. Blessed with nine children, the two ran the store until 1991 in addition to the family farm. After the death of her beloved husband John, Darlene moved to Bishop Drumm in 2008, living most of her time at McAuley Terrace. In 2014, she went home to southern Iowa before spending her remaining days at Mercy Hospice. Darlene had a deep and abiding faith in the Catholic Church and was a longtime devoted member of St. Patrick's Church in Melrose. Always a beacon of hope and wisdom, Darlene was the consummate wife, mother and grandmother. Her unconditional love for family was ever-present and everyone she met became a friend. Darlene was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, sister (Freda), brothers (Gene and Max), and granddaughter (Amelia). She is survived by her nine children: Julie (Curtis) Anderson, Joan (Arnan) McCullough, Barbara Egeland, Tony (Kathy) Parenza, Anne (Rod) Holsapple, Joe (Marsha) Parenza, Mary Carla Parenza, Angela (Carolyn) Parenza-Fredrick, and Dean (Anne) Parenza. Darlene is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Melrose on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation and viewing will be held 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services.
