Madeline Margaret Belzer, age 96, of Albia, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia. She was born on April 27, 1925 in Monroe County, Iowa to Earl Walter and Mabel Agnes (Wagner) Prothero. \n\nShe graduated from Albia High School, class of 1942. She married Bobby Gene Belzer, son of William Belzer and Hazel Stuchel on June 1, 1946 by Rev. Lambert Heinen at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia. \n\nMadeline worked for Armour and Co in Mason City, Western Auto Store in Albia. After raising her children, she worked for Albia Community School as a teacher's associate in special education for sixteen years, until her retirement in 1993. \n\nShe held office in P.T.A. at St. Mary's School, member of the Albia Band Mother's, St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society, Legion Auxiliary, Friends of Library in Albia. She also belonged to the St. Mary's Precious Blood Companions, and was a charter member.\n\nShe enjoyed playing cards with the Canasta Card Club for over sixty years, long time member of the Dancing Granny's, was an avid reader, and St. Louis Cardinals fan. In 2004 she was given the name "Doll Lady" as she was noted to have refurbished over 900 dolls which were donated to needy children. \n\nMadeline is survived by her children, Diane (Howard) Slagter of Branson, MO, Timothy Belzer of Albia, Mary Ann (Jim) McVay of Chandler, AZ; Jim (Becky) Belzer of Albia; eight grandchildren, Andrew (Bridget) Slagter, James (Traci) Slagter, William (Stephanie) Ahlrichs, Jay Ahlrichs, Nicolas Ahlrichs, Christy (Chance) Lautner, Judy (Brett) Frieden, Bobby J. Belzer; six great grandchildren, Lincoln Slagter, Martin Slagter, Francesca Slagter, Raegan Lautner, Chett Ahlrichs, Barry Frieden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Mabel Prothero; husband, Bobby G. Belzer, daughter, Patricia during birth; son, Dennis; sister, Mary Ellen Rowe; brothers, Eugene Edward Prothero, James Louis Prothero. \n\nA Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 31, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia with Father Timothy Armbruster officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia, opening to the public at 11:00 a.m., with family present from 2-5 p.m. A Rosary will be recited by the St. Mary's Altar and Rosary at 4:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
