Virgil Shondel

Virgil Lee Shondel, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on November 3, 2026, in Albia, Iowa. Born in Centerville, Iowa, on June 3, 1949, to Albert and Willma Hayes Shondel, Virgil lived a life marked by dedication and love for his family. He attended Centerville Community Schools and served briefly in the military, receiving an honorable discharge. Following his service, Virgil returned to Centerville, where he embarked on a diverse career as a laborer in radiator builds. On December 31, 1978, he married Laura Bennett in Rock Island, Illinois, and together they raised a family that became the center of his world. An avid outdoorsman, Virgil found immense joy in fishing with his brothers, hunting with his son and grandchildren, and partaking in auctions.

Virgil is survived by his children: Terri Shondel, Virgil Shondel Jr., Chad (Kele) Shondel, Nickole (Jim) Archer, and Virgil “Bub” (Chelsea) Shondel III. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Heather, Randy Jr., Patricia, Jacob, Suzie, Sam, Annie, Abbie, Carly, Ella, Peyton, Piper, and Patrick, as well as 13 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his cherished wife Laura, his parents, his son Randy, a brother, and three sisters, Virgil leaves behind a family enriched by his love and dedication. Friends and family are encouraged to leave memories and upload photos to his memorial page to celebrate his life and share in the joy he brought to those who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 10-11 a.m., at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia. Funeral Services will also be on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery north of Centerville. Memorials have been established to the family and will directed at a later date.
